Annie Leibovitz was born October 2, 1949 in Waterbury, Connecticut. Her mother was a modern dance instructor, while her father was a lieutenant colonel in the United States Air Force.She attended school in the San Francisco Art Institute with a plan to studying painting. The summer before her junior year she and her mother took a trip to Japan and it was there that she discovered her love for taking photographs. She then began taking some courses in photography. In 1970 Annie showed her portfolio to the editor of Rolling Stone magazine. He was impressed and assigned her to the task of photographing John Lennon. Two years later Rolling Stone named her chief photographer. in 1983 Annie became Vanity Fair magazine’s first contributing photographer. In 2005 the American Society of Magazine Editors named a photo Leibovitz took for Rolling Stone the best magazine cover from the past 40 years and a photo of pregnant Demi Moore was named the second best. Leibovitz has photographed a massive range of celebrities and her pictures have appeared in Vogue, The New York Times Magazine, and The New Yorker, and in ad campaigns for American Express and the Gap. Annie has published several books that include her work. She has three daughters, Sarah, Susan, and Samuelle. Susan and Samuelle are twins and were born to a surrogate mother.
When I read the two assignments Annie immediately came to mind. She’s one of the only famous photographers I’m familiar with by name. Also I’ve seen many of her photos in real life so her work is a bit more special to me.
